Celebrate Hanukkah with Fun Preschool Projects: Ideas from Albrich Academy

December 6, 2024

At Albrich Academy, we love incorporating cultural traditions into hands-on learning experiences for our preschoolers. Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about traditions, history, and the joy of giving through creative, age-appropriate activities. Here are some fun Hanukkah-themed projects perfect for preschoolers!

1. DIY Menorah Craft

Materials Needed:

  • Paper towel roll or cardboard tube
  • Construction paper (yellow and blue)
  • Glue and scissors
  • Glitter for decoration

Instructions:

  1. Cut the cardboard tube into 9 small sections to represent candles.
  2. Cover each “candle” with blue construction paper and glue them together in a row.
  3. Cut flames from yellow paper and attach them to the top of each candle.
  4. Decorate the menorah with glitter and stickers.

This craft not only reinforces the significance of the menorah but also encourages fine motor skills and creativity!

2. Dreidel Decorating and Game

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden or plastic dreidels
  • Washable markers or paint
  • Stickers and glitter for decoration

Instructions:

  1. Let the children decorate their dreidels with colorful designs and sparkles.
  2. Teach them how to play the traditional dreidel game, explaining the meanings of the Hebrew letters on the sides.

Playing dreidel is a great way to enhance coordination while introducing preschoolers to Hanukkah customs in a playful manner.

3. Hanukkah Counting Candles

Materials Needed:

  • Craft sticks or paper cutouts
  • Paint and markers
  • Number stickers

Instructions:

  1. Paint or color 9 craft sticks to resemble Hanukkah candles.
  2. Add numbers 1–9 to each stick.
  3. Have children practice counting by placing the candles in the correct order.

This activity combines math skills with holiday fun, making learning both festive and engaging.

4. Latke Collage Art

Materials Needed:

  • Tan and brown tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Large paper plate

Instructions:

  1. Tear the tissue paper into small pieces to represent shredded potatoes.
  2. Glue the pieces onto the paper plate to create a “latke.”
  3. Let the children add “sour cream” or “applesauce” with white and yellow tissue paper.

This activity allows kids to create their own “latkes” while discussing traditional Hanukkah foods and their meanings.

5. Hanukkah Storytime and Music

Pair your projects with a Hanukkah storybook like Sammy Spider’s First Hanukkah or The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming. Follow storytime with a sing-along of Hanukkah songs like I Have a Little Dreidel.
